Richard Fahey
Richard started life in Malton in 1984 as conditional jockey to the great Jimmy Fitzgerald at Norton Grange stables. As a 7lb claimer he rode a Boxing Day double for his boss landing both divisions of the St Ivo Novices hurdle on Sister Claire and Weight Problem.
With a steady rise through the conditional ranks Richard became joint Conditional Champion Jockey in the 1988/89 season after steering home the Michael Chapman trained Wisconsin at Market Rasen in the last race of the season.
After losing his claim Richard continued to ride winners , notably Suivez Moi in the Coral Bookmakers handicap Hurdle at Fakenham and Eastern Guide in the Coral Golden Handicap Hurdle at Ayr.
Richard secured his most important success over fences in 1991 taking the Bobby Renton Memorial Novice Chase at Wetherby for father-in-law Peter Easterby on Icarus.
Richard rode his final winner on the Peter Easterby trained Gymcrak Gamble in a Perth maiden hurdle
Finally retiring with over 100 winners under both riding codes Richard reflected he wasn’t quite good enough for the riding game but to ride over 100 winners is no mean feat. He realised his future revolved around training racehorses.
Richard Fahey has saddled over 30 Group races winners in the UK, Ireland, France, and Canada.
Group 1 winners include:
2021 – Perfect Power Dual Group 1 winner Darley Prix Morny & Juddmonte Middle Park.
2018 - Sands of Mali British Champions Sprint Stakes.
2017 - Ribchester Triple Group 1 winner Queen Anne Stakes, Qatar Prix Du Moulin & Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes.
2014 – Garswood Prix Maurice de Gheest.
2012 - Mayson July Cup at Newmarket.
2010 - Wootton Bassett Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère at Longchamp.
Having trained over 3,000 winners on the flat and over jumps. From starting out, in the summer of 1993, from Manor Farm, Butterwick, near Malton, with a modest string which barely reached double-figures, Richard has never looked back.
2002 - Richard got his first Royal Ascot winner courtesy of Superior Premium – a colt he bought as a yearling for 2,800gns- who clinched a 20–1 triumph in the Cork and Orrery Stakes under Johnny Murtagh.
2005 - Richard made the move to his current base Musley Bank.
2008 - 100 winners for the first time from the Musley Bank Maestro
2010 - Fahey burst through the £2 million prize money barrier with 181 winners in Britain. He also saddled his first Group One winner with Wootton Bassett in the 2010 Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère at Longchamp.
2015 - Richard equalled the record for the most calendar wins with 235.
I might have the name on the licence, but without the huge team of staff, lads and lasses I am afraid I am nothing. Training racehorses is very labour intensive and you need the best staff you can get. We are very lucky we have some very good staff. We like all our owners to feel part of the set up here at Musley Bank , rather than us making them a cup of coffee we like them to make us one. We want the owners, jockeys and staff all to feel part of our winning team
