Young John claimed his second win of the season at Newcastle. He was sent off at 10 to 1 and was always in contention under Jack Garritty. They made headway over the final two furlongs and when they hit the front stayed on to win by half a length.
Windsor had had a lot of rain on Monday and when the ground gets soft the jockeys tend to ride on the far side of the track. Well normally they do but on this occasion it was only Jamie Spencer onboard Young John who decided to take that route. It was a brave call and luckily it proved to be the right one. Racing on the better ground Young John was always clear of the others and he eased down to win by two-and-three-quarter-lengths. Obviously Richard is taking full credit for the tactics but Jamie did give a rather amusing interview after the race. Well done to owners Mr and Mrs Riney.
