SATURDAY’S SIX WINNERS

What a day! Six winners across four tracks with five different jockeys. We weren’t sure it was going to be that kind of day though after a couple of seconds Richard was shouting at the television but then Mr Lupton showed that amazing attitude to win the feature race at York. Jockey Jamie Spencer was desperate to ride him and for him to run in this race after they finished third at Newmarket in May. It was a tough ask carrying top weight but with a big pot to be won it was worth the chance. Mr Lupton was given a typical Spencer ride, held up ready to pounce late. They hit the front inside the final furlong and powered clear to win by half a length. It’s been an incredible introduction to racing for owner Noel Kershaw who got involved with Mr Lupton after buying half of him at Graham Wylie’s charity day. Richard is also happy as he owns the other half. We’ll see how Mr Lupton is over the next few days but he’ll run in the Wokingham if he gets in.

We then doubled up at York with a Royal Applause filly making her debut. Marie Of Lyon is a horse we have always liked. She was very relaxed before the race and looked a picture in the paddock. She was held up in mid division by jockey Paul Hanagan and when they wanted to make a move they had to be patient and wait for a gap. They made headway inside the final furlong and pulled clear to win by a length-and-a-half. It was a smart performance and there’s lots to look forward to for owners Clipper Logisitics.

We also doubled up at Chester. Celebration won the Class 3 Handicap under jockey Paddy Mathers. The three-year-old has been placed on his first three starts this season so he’s been knocking on the door. He tracked the leaders and made an effort to challenge over a furlong out. He battled with the favourite Reflektor all the way to the line but got up to beat him by a neck.

We finally had a Chester winner for Dr Marwan Koukash, to say he’s been unlucky this season would be an understatement. He’s been handed some horrendous draws and his horses have been running well without winning, well that changed with Lexi’s Hero. He made all under Paddy Mathers and was only troubled in the last furlong, but we weren’t worried as it was Marwan’s other runner Ballesteros. The pair battled and Lexi rallied again to win by a neck. Marwan was there and he celebrated with a couple of soap stars Kelvin Fletcher and Ryan Thomas.

Marwan had already had a winner with Gabrial The Tiger at Musselburgh. The four-year-old loves the track winning on all three of his starts there. He made all under jockey Adam McNamara and they set a strong pace. He stayed on really strongly and was never troubled winning by a length-and-three-quarters. Marwan is going to present the winning owners trophy to a fan at Salford’s game with Castleford in early July.

Our final and sixth winner of the day was Hidden Treasures at Leicester. She was sent off as one of the outsiders of the field at 10 to 1 but that didn’t bother her. She was always prominent under jockey Tony Hamilton. She had the lead two furlongs from home and was challenged by Flying Fantasy. Hidden Treasures rallied again and stayed on to hold off the challenge and win by a neck. A great result for owner Andrew Tinkler.
