ALY WINS GODOLPHIN AWARD

Last night was a fantastic evening at the Godolphin Stud and Staff Awards and it was topped off by our very own Aly Deniel winning the rider/groom category. Aly was shortlisted for the award and had an interview yesterday along with the other two finalists. She was asked about her role, working for Richard and how she thought racing would look in the future. The finalists also spent the afternoon at the House Of Parliament talking to MP’s. Aly was announced as the winner at a dinner in London and to say Aly was shocked was an understatement. There were a few tears as Aly received her trophy from Sir Anthony McCoy and when Claire Balding asked what’s the key to being a good rider she said “Understanding them. Getting to know them. Having empathy with them…and loving them”

This is a fantastic achievement, we nominated Aly for her efforts with Birchwood at the Breeders’ Cup and it was great to see her pick up such a brilliant award. Godolphin put up some fantastic prize money and both Aly and the yard get £5000. We are very lucky to have hard working and enthusiastic staff and we are looking forward to another great season.

FRIDAY DOUBLE

It’s been a good few days with four winners from five runners. Theos Lolly made all under jockey Dave Nolan at Lingfield. He battled hard inside the final furlong and showed a great attitude to win by a head. We then doubled up with Bayan Kasirga at Wolverhampton. This time Tony Hamilton was in the saddle and they tracked the leader and made a challenge two furlongs from home. They took up the lead and stayed on to win by half a length.

235 WINNERS – RECORD MATCHED

It was a fantastic day yesterday as we matched the British record for most flat winners in a year. Richard Hannon Snr sent out 235 winners in 2013 and thanks to a Lingfield double through Gabrial The Hero and Luis Vaz De Torres we have equaled that number.

It was also an important day for jockey Tony Hamilton, he rode his 100th winner on Gabrial The Hero. It’s the first time Tony has reached the landmark and over 80 of those winners have been for us, a fantastic achievement. We send out a few runners of the next few days and we are keeping our fingers crossed we can break the record. We have been overwhelmed with the tweets and phone calls congratulating us and we must say thank you to all of our owners. A bigger thank you though must be given to our fantastic staff. They work incredibly hard and there is no doubt we wouldn’t have had such an amazing season without them.

INAAM FIRST WINNER OF 2016

After just a few days of being able to celebrate the fact we equalled the record of 235 winners in a year, the tally went back to zero on January 1st. Inaam is our first winner of 2016 and he was given a great ride by jockey David Nolan at Wolverhampton. He didn’t have much racing room but Dave switched to the outside and they chased down the leader. He stayed on well to win by a length and three quarters. It was a great result for owners Yorkshire Connections who have had to be patient with this horse.

BILLY BOND WINS AT SOUTHWELL

Billy Bond finally got his head in front at Southwell. He had been knocking on the door finishing second on his last three starts and he was in the mood for winning yesterday. He didn’t get the best of starts but when Sammy Jo Bell asked him to go on the turn for home he stretched clear and won by a massive 13 lengths. A great result for owner and breeder Mr and Mrs Ashton.

NEW RECRUIT NUNO TRISTAN WINS

Nuno Tristan has only just joined the yard but he followed up with his win at Chelmsford with another good victory at Wolverhampton. He had a good position on the inside rail and jockey Sammy Jo Bell timed his run perfectly. He chased down the leader and took up the lead inside the final furlong. He kept on well to win by a length and a quarter.

WOLVERHAMPTON DOUBLE -Abbey Angel and Mitre Peak

We’ve had a few winners on the all-weather over the winter and we had two at Wolverhampton. Abbey Angel gave the Richard Fahey Ebor Racing Club their first win of the year. She was held up in fourth by jockey Jack Garritty and started to make progress two furlongs out. She pressed the leader and stayed on strongly to beat the favourite by two and a quarter lengths. Mitre Peak won the final race on the card in impressive style. She tracked the leaders and when jockey David Nolan asked her to go she pulled clear and went on to win by four and a half lengths.
